Welcome to the ISDCThe Club is a non-profit making organisation, run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. The ISDC was established in 1999 and joined in 2000 by an Irish web-based club. Together our aim is to share knowledge and experience of Subaru ownership and how owners can fully appreciate and enjoy the Subaru driving experience. We aim to offer non-partial advice on how best to achieve this and along with our sponsors give the best value parts and services for our members. The majority of activities and discussion takes place on our Forum and we would encourage all of our members to join in on the discussion. We will also aim to send text alerts and newsletters detailing all upcoming events and also report on previously held events. We aim to organise a variety of events throughout the year such as Meetings, Track Days, Rolling Road Days, Charity Drives, Photo Shoots and many more. There are also many local meets during the year so people can put faces to names and have an informal chat about their Subarus. This is also where new members can come along and see what the ISDC is all about. We hope that all members of the ISDC will find the club a friendly, knowledgeable and approachable place where they can express and share their views and knowledge and enjoy the experience for both themselves and their families.

History of the Irish Subaru Drivers Club (ISDC)The first meeting was to be held in a pub known as the Deer Park in Dublin. Unfortunately, and very inconsiderately, someone had decided to demolish the premises without telling our founding fathers, (although they found out as soon as they got there). But true to the spirit of the ISDC an executive decision was made to move the meeting to another premises, namely The Goat Inn in Goatstown. Four people attended the meeting, Philip, Paul, Cathal Gallagher, who had travelled down from Donegal and Dominic Ward. Although it must be said that all the cars there were not Subarus. Founder member Paul McLoughlin arrived in an Alfa Romeo as his Subaru had been stolen. Between that and the meeting place being knocked down you’d wonder if the gods were trying to tell them something! The first committee was formed at the club's first AGM in Dunshauglin in Co. Meath. Philip Begley was elected Chairman, Paul McLoughlin Vice-Chairman and Catherine Cox Secretary. Alan Duffy succeeded Catherine as Secretary when work commitments meant she had to step down from the committee. The present (2007) committee consists of:

From these humble beginnings the club we know today came to be. We now have over 250 forum members and over 100 Full ISDC Members. We are in contact with the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club in the UK and with The North American Subaru Owners Club on an ongoing basis. One problem with having 32 county membership was how to get the members together on a regular basis without expecting them to travel miles up and down the country. This problem was addressed when a decision was taken at a meeting in Athlone in October 2001 with the agreement of the general body that the club should be regionalised and run by either regional managers or local sub-committees.
The first such committee was the Munster section which had it’s first meeting at the Vienna Woods Hotel in Cork on 20th of January 2002 and 17 resplendent Subarus graced the car park on that first day. The first meeting was chaired by Pat Nolan. Maurice Ronan and Ciaran Walsh were elected to run the Section with Pat.
There were 20 cars at the second meeting, on 22nd of Feb, and it was decided here to change the name to the Southern Section to facilitate the country being broken into 3 sections, South, Midland and North, all running coast to coast. The apparent success of the Southern section gave the impetus to get the rest of the local committees up and running as soon as possible. So now you know the rough history of the club let's move on to the present and the future. The aim of the club is to share, through its members, the knowledge and experience of Subaru owners, to improve the awareness of products and services available to our members. To organise events, such as track days for owners and their families, as well as attending motor shows, etc., and to encourage the overall improvement of everyone’s driving abilities.
There are a number of reasons why people join the ISDC. To some it is a way of meeting other Subaru owners from all over the country. They get their enjoyment from meeting up with people at the various shows where the club would have a stand set up. Shows, for the most part, they would not know about if it wasn’t through contact with the ISDC. They take great pride in the appearance of their cars and enjoy having people admire them and maybe take a few photos with the kids.
Then there are the members who enjoy the high performance end of things. For them the track days would be the place to try out that new dump valve, induction kit or maybe that magic chip, and do so in a relatively safe and controlled environment, where risk to pedestrians and other road users would be eliminated. At these events ideas are swapped, upgrades are discussed and members can be told of the pitfalls/benefits of one type of product against another.
Then there are the people who, for some inexplicable reason, want to be involved in the daily running of the club. The guys/gals who organise the shows, the meetings, the track days and the website and who still pay their membership the same as the rest of us. While I’m on the subject, there is plenty of room in this category. If you wish to get involved - just mention it to any committee member and he/she will do the rest. (Just remember to say goodbye to your family first) Only joking, it’s not that bad.
The club's main method of getting information out to members and for members to get information to each other is through cyberspace, the club's own website where you can log on for info from any of the members or just enjoy the fun on the message board.
Also when we manage to get club stickers, etc. sponsored, they are given out to the members at the meetings. So when you consider postage, paper, phone calls and the cost of running the web site I’m sure you’ll agree that your €50 membership is being put to good use. We accept that members have to pay to enter their car on the track at track days but if we didn’t get the members to pay for this we would be bankrupt overnight with the charges we have to pay the tracks. We genuinely do not make anything for the club from these days out. If you have any thoughts/suggestions on this we would be delighted to hear from you.
Just simply complete the application form here (or download, print and complete the pdf version) submit, along with the relevant fee of €50 to the address contained thereon! You will receive an ISDC membership pack by return with a club stickers, members yearbook, newsletter and details of other discounts.
Yes, if you think they would be interested in what we do. If you know this person personally be sure to explain what we are about and what to expect. If he/she still wishes to go ahead and join, have them fill out the application form on this site and send it, along with the relevant fee to the address contained thereon. If they wish to know why the questions about their insurance are included in the application form explain that we are trying to obtain a discounted group insurance policy for the club but that we need at least 100 members to sign up to it.
So there you have it, I hope this handbook goes some of the way to explaining what exactly the club is about. But it is very important to remember that a club, any club, is only as good as its members. If there is something you are not happy with or you feel could be done better, come and tell any of the committee. At the end of the day, it is your club so try to get involved as much as you can, any help would be greatly appreciated.
