Nick's MY06 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C

Nick's Story

My first car was a MY99 STi Version 5, which was a dream of mine to one day own, I got a call in work one day in 2007 from my younger brother Dan, he said "get the Auto Trader quick there is a "savage White Impreza Spec C for sale in it, I think you should ring up about it". So that's what I did and made arrangements to go view it that evening, couldn't wait to get a look at it in the flesh, from the picture in the Auto Trader I just had to see it, we drove an hour and 40min to meet the chap, as soon as I seen it I had to get it, an awesome looking car and in savage white. The next day I was on to the bank and hey presto, I bought it. I am the first registered owner of it and, when bought, it only had 3 kilometres driving to its history.

The story of the Subaru Impreza Spec C

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, announced that it would submit a homologation application to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for the finely tuned new Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C to rally as a Group N vehicle in 2006.

To enter FIA-approved racing and rallying championships that take place around the world, cars must be homologated according to the FIA regulations.

Group N (production cars) is one of the rally and off-road vehicle groups set forth by the FIA.

Defined as large-scale series production touring cars, Group N homologation imposes strict limits on modifications to production models and is known as the category that best reflects the performance inherent to the basic production model.

WRX STi Spec C is very suitable for racing due to its lightened body and high performance engine. Therefore, the application embodies the company’s plan to position this model as a key competitor in motorsport activities for 2005 and beyond.

FHI produced more than 1,000 units of the Impreza WRX STi Spec C during 2005, which is the minimum level of production required for Group N classification, and the company planned to have the vehicle homologated before the 2006 rally season began.

Major Features of the finely tuned new Impreza WRX STi Spec C:

Compared to the Impreza WRX STi, Impreza WRX STi Spec C is about 70 kilograms lighter through the adaptation of lighter glass, a trunk lid composed of aluminium, and thinner roof construction with roof vent.

Reinforcing braces have been added to the front strut tower on the WRX STi Spec C. In addition, the solid bars used to connect the front pillar and upper frame have been replaced by enhanced hollow bars and rigidity of chassis have been improved.

A rear crossbar has been fitted to further improve body rigidity.

2litre flat four turbo, 6 speed transmission with DCCD (driver controlled centre Diff).

The twin scroll turbocharger in the Impreza WRX STi spec C uses precise ball bearings in the shaft to reduce friction, thereby offering a smooth and speedy turbo boost and providing ideal engine response.

Brembo's front and rear.

A large water reservoir for the intercooler water spray as well as an air-cooled engine oil cooler have been implemented to ensure stable engine performance.

What makes your car so ‘special’ to you?

The smile it puts on my face from the time I turn it over to start, the 1400rpm sound of it on tick over when cold, gradually reducing to 450/500rpm to let me know she’s ready to be on our way, driving along at 2500rpm just to get the blood circulating, after a while when temps are up indicating out from a slip road to join up with some decent blacktop looking in the mirror to see a capable BM, Merc or what ever it be about to loose there composure, 5th gear clutch blip the throttle pop 4th rear squats down and gone, the roar from the nur spec ha ha that's the life, until the time I pull into the driveway put her in neutral, make her safe, and let the apexi count down to lights out, grinning to the front door you "lucky fooker".

What does the club membership mean to you?

The ISDC is more than a club, it's a family of Subaru nuts, giving advice and helping out with problems, guiding new members through the joys of Subaru ownership and all more than willing to give any help they can. Meeting up for friendly banter before the queue to start up and head for the event, be it paint-balling, rolling road day, car show or charity drive, joking, laughing, old friends new friends and always good craic.

What changes are you going to make to your car?

When I have the means, a hybrid turbo + any supporting mods for 400hp+, carbon side skirts and spats, wheels and up rated discs and pads, then when the power bug strikes again engine build and mods for 500hp+.

What are you seeking from your car?

To keep the thrill factor and the Subaru spirit alive and well.

When, if at all, will you replace your car?

Tricky question it would have to be something very special for me to give up being a Subaru owner, so at the moment I cant answer that question, but only to say I don't plan on going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
